Ring doesn’t make a smart lock, but there are several smart locks that work with Ring.

When you integrate a smart lock with Ring, you can lock and unlock your door lock directly from the Ring app.

This is extremely useful since you can unlock your door while live viewing the video from your Ring Doorbell. Control your lock without leaving the Ring App!

The table below shows the best smart locks that you can integrate with Ring.

Please Note:  Ring Alarm can integrate with all of the Z-Wave door locks listed below. However, the Ring Doorbell can only integrate with a WiFi door lock using Amazon Key if you don’t have Ring Alarm.

Schlage makes some of the most secure locks on the market. For the smart locks we are considering, Schlage is the only manufacturer that makes a smart lock that works with Ring that is rated BHMA/ANSI Grade 1 certified. A grade 1 BHMA/ANSI rating is the top residential rating that can be given to a deadbolt.

Additionally, the Schlage Connect lock has a built in alarm. You can set up the alarm to give you audible alerts when the door is opened or closed. The lock can also give off an emergency alarm if it senses tampering or excessive door vibrations from someone trying to break in.

The Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt lock uses a fingerprint resistant touchscreen for the outdoor keypad. It is important that the touchscreen doesn’t show fingerprints so other people can’t look at the common numbers that you press. The touchpad is a pressure sensitive resistive touchscreen so it will work even if you are wearing gloves.

Once you connect the Schlage smart lock to Ring Alarm, you will use the Ring App to manage the lock. You can use the Ring App to lock or unlock the lock, create and manage access codes, see usage history, and check the battery level. The Schlage smart lock can create up to 30 unique access codes.

The lock is connected to Ring Alarm so you can also link alarm actions to the door lock. For example, you can lock the door and arm Ring Alarm at the same time. You can also trigger Ring Alarm to disarm when a person unlocks the smart lock with a pin code. This makes the entire Ring Alarm system even better.

You can also control the Schlage smart lock using Alexa. You can lock, unlock or get the current status of the lock using your voice. Just ask, “Alexa, is the front door locked”?

Overall, the Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt is one of the most secure locks you can buy for you Ring Alarm. The device is certified by Ring for seamless integration with Ring Alarm. This is the lock for you if you prioritize security for your door lock.

Ring Doorbell Kwikset Lock

Kwikset is an extremely popular lock that also makes good smart locks. The Kwikset SmartKey allows you to re-key the smart lock to match existing Kwikset locks already installed in your home (smart or regular). This makes Kwikset a great choice if you want to keep the same house keys for all the locks on your home.

The Kwikset SmartCode 914 deadbolt uses a 10 digit keypad to gain access to your home. The 10 digit keypad uses physical keys, which are easier to use if you are wearing gloves. A keypad is arguably more reliable than a touch screen too. The Kwikset keypad uses backlit buttons so you can easily see the numbers in the dark.

Like the other locks, you manage the Kwikset smart lock in the Ring app after you connect it to Ring Alarm using Z-Wave. You can control the lock, manage access codes and review usage history directly in the Ring App. Kwikset allows you to create up to 30 unique access codes within Ring Alarm.

The Kwikset 914 Smart Lock is ANSI/BHMA grade 2 certified (rated 1-3 where 1 is the best). This isn’t as good as the Schlage lock (grade 1 certified), but it is very good and higher rated than most consumer grade locks. The grade 2 certification of the Kwikset 914 is why I recommend this lock over the popular Kwikset 888 Smart Lock, which is grade 3 certified (lowest rating).

The Kwikset locks have been improved to fix vulnerabilities found in previous versions. These locks are engineered to prevent picking, bumping and other methods to force open a lock.

Kwikset picking and bumping challenge

Overall, if you already have Kwikset locks then this is a great choice for your home. You can use the Kwikset SmartKey to re-key your smart lock and still use your current house keys. The keypad is also easier to use than other locks with touchscreens.

Ring Doorbell Yale Lock

Yale makes some great locks and the Yale Assure Lock is one of the best looking smart locks on the market. It’s modern and minimal design is a great look for a smart home.

The Yale Real Living Assure lock uses a Touchscreen Keypad to unlock your door. The touchscreen keypad is backlit for easy use during the night. The digital screen displays 10 digits and you can lock the door by touching three fingers on the pad at the same time.

A unique feature of the Yale Assure smart lock is that it does NOT have a key. The only way to open the lock is using the digital keypad. This is a modern approach that fits in with the modern look of the lock. Once you have a smart lock, you will likely never use the key again. I can open by door with a key, but I haven’t used it in the last 5 years since I have a smart lock.

Not having a key is a good security feature too. If you don’t have a key, a thief can’t pick or bump the lock to force it open.

The Yale Real Living Assure lock is BHMA/ANSI Grade 2 certified. Again, this isn’t rated as high as Schlage, but level 2 certification is better than most residential locks. This is a lock you can trust on your front door.

The Yale Assure lock is controlled in the Ring App after you successfully connect it to your Ring Alarm. You can create up to 250 access codes for your Yale lock. Like the other locks in this list, you can lock / unlock the smart lock directly in the Ring app. You can also create new codes and monitor usage of the codes in the Ring app.

The Yale smart lock uses 4 AA batteries to power the lock. Additionally, it has a 9 volt connector to use as a backup in case the batteries die and you can’t open the lock. This is important since this lock doesn’t have a physical key as backup like the other locks.

Overall, the Yale Real Living Assure smart lock is a good choice if you want a clean and modern look. The deadbolt is rated higher than most residential locks. Additionally, this lock can’t be picked since it doesn’t have a key!

Best Door Lock for Ring Doorbell

If you want to connect a smart lock to your Ring Doorbell without using Ring Alarm, then you only have one solid option.

Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt

Connection: WiFi (2.4 GHz)
Access: Keypad or Key
Alexa: Voice control to lock, unlock or get lock status

See Images and Price on Amazon

The Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt is the perfect solution if you simply want to lock or unlock your door directly from the Ring App. Schlage Encode connects using WiFi and does NOT need Ring Alarm or any other smart home hub.

The Schlage Encode uses a fingerprint resistant capacitive touchscreen (similar to a smartphone) to enter lock codes. The screen displays 10 digits that are lighted so you can easily see in the dark. Since the Encode uses a capacitive touchscreen, you unfortunately can’t wear gloves when entering the pin codes. This is one negative that is outweighed by a lot of other positives.

To use the Schlage Encode with Ring, you need to set up the lock with the Amazon Key App. The Amazon Key App allows you to link the lock to your Ring Doorbell in the Ring App. You can set up and manage up to 100 user codes in the Amazon Key App. After everything is connected, you can lock or unlock the Schlage Encode door lock in the Amazon Key App or directly in the Ring App when you are live viewing your doorbell video.

The Schlage Encode is a very secure deadbolt that is BHMA/ANSI Grade 1 certified (highest possible certification). It also has a built in alarm for audible notifications of doorbell events or security breaches. This means it is not just a smart lock. It is an extremely capable deadlock that you can trust on your door.

Overall, if you don’t have Ring Alarm then the Schlage Encode is the option for you to connect your smart lock to your Ring Doorbell. Fortunately, it is a great option that is one of the most secure and capable locks available out of all the smart locks.

Ring Door Lock Integration Options

This section is to help clarify your options for integrating smart locks with your Ring Doorbell. There are two options we will discuss for connecting Ring with smart locks: 1) Z-Wave Connections with Ring Alarm and 2) WiFi Connections with the Amazon Key App.

Ring Alarm Z-Wave Smart Lock Connections

The first way to integrate smart locks with Ring is using Ring Alarm. The Ring Alarm base station can connect to many Z-Wave smart locks.

Once connected, you can control the Z-Wave smart lock in the Ring App. You can lock or unlock your door while live viewing the Ring video feed. You can also see lock pin usage history or the battery status of your door lock. Additionally, you will use the Ring App to create and manage lock pin access codes.

The Ring Alarm Z-Wave connection also enables you to arm or disarm your alarm when the smart lock is locked. For example, when you arrive home and enter your lock pin, your door will unlock and your Ring Alarm will automatically disarm. You can also set up Ring Alarm to arm when you lock the door.

Using Z-Wave smart locks with Ring Alarm is the best way to integrate these devices. You have the most smart lock options and it is the most reliable and stable connection.

Amazon Key App WiFi Smart Lock Connections

The second way to integrate a smart lock with Ring is using the Amazon Key App. WIth the Amazon Key App, you can connect a WiFi smart lock to your Ring Doorbell. The Amazon Key App allows you to create and manage lock codes and PINs to use with the WiFi smart lock.

Once connected, you can lock or unlock your WiFi smart lock directly from the Ring App. For example, when you are viewing the Ring Doorbell video there will be a lock icon in the screen that allows you to unlock or lock the door.

If you don’t have a Ring Alarm, this is the only option you have to directly integrate your Ring Doorbell with a smart lock. Just make sure you have a strong and stable WiFi connection and this is still a good option.

Ring Smart Lock Conclusion

It’s worth it!

Integrating a smart lock with your Ring Doorbell or Ring Alarm is useful and adds to the functionality of your smart home.

I recommend integrating with Ring Alarm if possible. Ring Alarm is a great and surprising affordable solution, especially if you already have a Ring Doorbell.

  1. I have been using a Kwikset 888 smart lock connected to my Ring Alarm base station using Z-Wave. I have had no problems with either the lock or the Ring alarm, however, I am not able to unlock the door when viewing the live view from my Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 camera. I do not wish to accomplish this by using Key by Amazon and according to your section on Ring Alarm Z-Wave Smart Lock Connections (which is very helpful and smartly written btw), I should be able to unlock the door from a live view. Can you tell me how I can do this? Much appreciated.

  2. With some of these locks would it be possible for a possible intruder to yell loudly near an outside window and have Alexa hear them request for the door to unlock they are by unlocking the door and letting the intruder in via the Alexa placement being near a window?

  3. Hi Jason, I’m in Canada and we don’t have Amazon Key yet. I’m installing a ring video doorbell. I’m also looking at adding a Encode Smart lock. Will it work with Alexa at home or away with out Key?

    1. Yes…Schlage Encode works with Alexa using the Schlage app. The Encode will work with Ring using the Amazon Key app. You might be able to use the Amazon Key app without using the Amazon Key service. I have it setup and I’ve never used the Amazon Key service for deliveries.

  4. Excellent summary and description of Ring-compatible systems, but I have a specific requirement I cannot find a solution for: I have a front porch gate I want to be ale to lock and unlock via either WiFI, Z-Wave or even Bluetooth. But the critical and missing function I need is a system that PREVENTS and intruder from simply reaching around to release the lock via thumb piece or door lever. I recognize the alleged fire/safety implications, but positioning a removable key or thumb piece nearby inside the home would alleviate that concern, and anyone with multiple other exits from the home also mitigates that potential problem. I have seen only one potential solution, but it is Chinese made, and it has questionable reviews. IDEAS?

    1. Hi Barry…there isn’t much on the market for this issue. I’ll keep a watch out for this type of product in the future.
